EN 42CrMo4 (Werkstoff 1.7225) is the European standard chromium-molybdenum alloy steel and the direct equivalent to AISI 4140. Specified under EN 10083-3 for quenched and tempered steels, 42CrMo4 is the most commonly specified alloy engineering steel in European manufacturing for medium-to-heavy-duty components. It offers deep hardenability (Jominy hardenability band +HH/+HL grades available for narrow-hardenability applications), excellent hot working characteristics, and good machinability in the annealed or quenched-and-tempered condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is EN 42CrMo4 a direct substitute for AISI 4140?
Structurally yes — both are medium-carbon Cr-Mo steels with nearly identical carbon ranges. 42CrMo4 typically has slightly tighter sulfur control (0.020-0.040% or controlled-sulfur grades). However, material certifications differ: 42CrMo4 is certified to EN 10204 3.1 by European mills; AISI 4140 is certified to ASTM A29/A322 with North American mill test reports (MTRs). For projects requiring specific certification, spec the material to the governing standard rather than relying on 'equivalent' cross-reference. For non-certified general engineering, they are interchangeable.
