ASTM A36 structural steel angles are L-shaped hot-rolled sections available in equal-leg and unequal-leg configurations according to AISC standards, from L1×1×1/8 up to L8×8×1-1/8. Angles are the most versatile structural shape, used for bracing, truss webs and chords, lintels, connection clips, tower legs, and framing connections. The 90° geometry provides two perpendicular legs for easy bolting or welding to gusset plates and other members. Hot-dip galvanizing or shop priming extends service life in exposed environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can A36 angles be used for overhead lifting (below-the-hook)?

For lifting devices covered by ASME B30.20, A36 is generally acceptable for structural components. However, the design must include a minimum 5:1 safety factor based on ultimate strength, and welds must be designed per AWS D14.1. For critical lifting applications, specify A572 Gr 50 angles with Charpy testing to ensure adequate toughness.
