Inconel 718 for Additive Manufacturing: LPBF Processing Parameters & Post-Heat Treatment
· Updated: 2026-05-27
Inconel 718 is the most widely used nickel superalloy in additive manufacturing (laser powder bed fusion). Its relatively wide processing window compared to other superalloys makes it more forgiving of LPBF parameter variations. However, post-process heat treatment is critical: solution treatment at 980°C for 1 hour followed by two-step aging (720°C/8h furnace cool + 620°C/8h air cool) is required to develop the gamma-double-prime strengthening phase that gives IN718 its high-temperature properties.
