6063-T6 Architectural Aluminum: Extrusion-Grade Alloy

ASTM B221 · Updated: 2026-05-25

6063-T6 is the standard architectural aluminum extrusion alloy, engineered for superior surface finish and anodizing quality with slightly lower strength than 6061. Its lower magnesium content (0.45-0.9% vs 6061's 0.8-1.2%) reduces quench sensitivity, enabling complex thin-wall extrusions without distortion. The T6 temper achieves 214 MPa yield strength—sufficient for window frames, door frames, curtain walls, railings, and architectural tubing. Produces the brightest, most uniform clear anodized finish of all 6xxx series alloys. The T5 temper (cooled from extrusion temperature and artificially aged) is even more common for architectural profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 6063 preferred over 6061 for architectural extrusions?

6063 extrudes faster and with better surface finish than 6061, essential for the cosmetic requirements of architectural products. It also anodizes to a brighter, more uniform finish. The lower strength of 6063 is sufficient for most architectural applications where the profile geometry provides stiffness. 6061 is used when higher mechanical strength is required, such as structural mullions in high-rise curtain walls.
