AISI 4140 ist ein chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) niedrig-alloy steel containing 0.38-0.43% C, 0.75-1.00% Mn, 0.80-1.10% Cr, 0.15-0.25% Mo. Der chromium provides hardenability und wear widerstand; molybdenum resists temper embrittlement und maintains strength bei elevated temperatures. 4140 ist der meiste widely used medium-carbon alloy steel für applications requiring hoch strength, fatigue widerstand, und toughness nach heat treatment. Typisch applications: aircraft landing gear, crankshafts, gears, axles, drill collars, bolt und studs für hoch-temperature service, und injection mold tooling. Nicht recommended für: welded structures ohne PWHT, applications über 400°C (creep strength degrades), oder corrosive environments ohne plating/coating.
4340 contains 1.65-2.0% nickel in addition zu Cr und Mo, dramatically improving niedrig-temperature toughness und durch-hardening depth (100+ mm sections). 4340 ist used für aircraft landing gear, heavy shafting, und kritisch fasteners. 4140 ist mehr economical (~30% unter kosten) und sufficient für meiste industrial applications.
